Citrus County Housing Services Awarded $3 Million in Springs Restoration Grants

CITRUS COUNTY Fla. (Oct. 28, 2026) – Gov. Ron DeSantis visited the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge & Visitor Center today to announce $50 million in Springs Restoration Grant funding to support improvements in water quality and spring flow.

Citrus County was awarded $3 million from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for septic-to-sewer conversion and upgrade projects. The funding will help eligible homeowners cover the costs of these upgrades, which reduce nitrogen pollution in local springs and waterways.

Citrus County Housing Services applied for the grant, as they administer a Septic Upgrade Incentive Program for eligible residents.

“In previous years, we’ve been awarded a total of around $5.3 million, which has been fully administered to successfully support 692 households in Citrus County,” said Housing Services Director Michelle Alford. “I’m excited that with this additional $3 million, we will be able to support an additional 385 households, bringing the total up to 1,077.”

“I applaud the hard work of Citrus County Housing Services and their dedication to serving residents in need,” said County Administrator Steve Howard. “I’m grateful that the State has awarded us over $8.3 million in Springs Restoration Grant funding over the years to directly support residents and protect our waters.”

Citrus County Housing Services anticipates receiving the newly awarded funds next year. The department is preparing notices and community outreach events to inform residents when the funding becomes available.

In addition to the $3 million awarded to Citrus County Housing Services, $2 million was awarded to the Homosassa River Restoration Project, and $2 million was awarded to Save Crystal River’s Kings Bay Restoration Project.

“These strategic investments will build on the progress we’ve made in protecting our natural resources and improving water quality in communities across Florida, so that we can leave this state to God better than we found it,” said Gov. Ron DeSantis.
