Embark on a voyage through a world of pirates, mermaids, sea monsters, and maritime legends during Leon County Government's eighth annual CosmicCon, a free, family-friendly event on Saturday, August 22, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at the Leon County Main Library. Featuring this year's theme, “Sirens, Sailors, and Sea Monsters,” CosmicCon will transform the library into a hub of nautical fantasy and adventure with hands-on activities, cosplay, demonstrations, scavenger hunts, trivia, and more.


Featured activities include:

  • Library Lecture Series: “King of the Monsters: How Godzilla Conquered the World” from 11 a.m. to noon – As a special presentation in conjunction with CosmicCon, Dr. Laura Lee of Florida State University's College of Motion Picture Arts will explore the enduring legacy of Godzilla and how the King of Monsters became one of the most influential figures in global popular culture.   • Trivia: The Siren's Challenge from noon to 1 p.m. – Test your knowledge of pirates, mythology and popular fandoms in this lightning-round trivia challenge.

  • Create a Kraken from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. – Bend pipe cleaners into a miniature kraken pen topper during this beginner-friendly craft.

  • Cosplay Competition from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. – Suit up in your favorite fandom cosplay and connect with fellow fans for a chance to win gift card prizes. Registration is required to participate. The competition will be followed by an all-ages costume parade.


Throughout the day, attendees can also enjoy crafts, community exhibits, scavenger hunts, demonstrations from local organizations, food trucks and other themed activities for all ages.
