NEW LEGAL RESOURCE FOR VETERANS OPENS IN NORTH PINELLAS COUNTY

Bay Area Legal Services and Bay Pines VA celebrate the launch of their fifth Medical-Legal Partnership, expanding access to free legal services for Veterans and their families

Bay Area Legal Services logoBay Area Legal Services will host a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, August 28, to celebrate the launch of its newest Veterans Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP) clinic serving low-income veterans and their families at the North Pinellas VA Clinic.

The event will bring together community partners, veterans, elected officials, and supporters to recognize the expansion of free civil legal services for veterans in northern Pinellas County.

"Medical-Legal Partnerships help remove legal barriers that can prevent Veterans from achieving stable housing, accessing benefits, and improving their quality of life," said Pye Young, managing attorney for Bay Area Legal Services West Office. "We're thrilled to expand this collaboration and strengthen pathways to justice for Veterans in northern Pinellas County."

Pinellas County is home to more than 67,000 vets, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, underscoring the need for accessible legal resources for Veterans and their families. The new clinic will expand access to free civil legal services for veterans facing legal challenges that can affect their health, housing, and financial stability, according to Bay Area Legal Services.

The North Pinellas VA clinic is the fifth Medical-Legal Partnership clinic established through the longstanding partnership between Bay Area Legal Services and Bay Pines VA Healthcare System.

Local and national leaders will attend the event, including representatives from the offices of Sen. Ashley Moody, Congressman Gus Bilirakis, and Florida Rep. Kim Berfield; Will Gunn of the Legal Services Corporation; and representatives from the FDVA and Pinellas County Veteran Services. Sen. Moody may also attend.

Medical-Legal Partnerships integrate civil legal services into healthcare settings, allowing veterans to connect with legal assistance through healthcare providers. Eligible low-income veterans and service members can receive free legal help with issues such as VA benefits and disability claims, housing stability, family law, domestic violence, and advance directives.

The North Pinellas VA Medical-Legal Partnership clinic is held on the fourth Thursday of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the North Pinellas VA Clinic.
