Most construction schedules have some give in them. School schedules do not. Every system had to be installed, inspected and finished around one fixed date, which required sequencing the work alongside general contractors, roofers, electricians, inspectors and district facilities staff.
The campuses completed this summer:
Rye Ranch Elementary School — Parrish, Manatee County Artisan Lakes Elementary School — Palmetto, Manatee County B.D. Gullett Elementary School — Bradenton, Manatee County Gilbert W. McNeal Elementary School — Lakewood Ranch, Manatee County Homosassa Elementary School — Homosassa, Citrus County Crystal River Primary School — Crystal River, Citrus County Carwise Middle School — Palm Harbor, Pinellas County West Zephyrhills Elementary School — Zephyrhills, Pasco County Charlotte Technical College — Port Charlotte, Charlotte County
All systems were installed to NFPA 780 and UL 96A, the national standards governing commercial lightning protection in the United States. The systems are engineered to intercept a strike and carry its energy safely into the ground, away from the structure and the people inside it.
The schools were not the company’s only work this summer. All South ran the school schedule while managing hospitals, high-rise buildings, residential communities, warehouses, industrial sites and commercial construction projects across Florida. The company is also providing lightning protection for Rangeland High School in Lakewood Ranch, the School District of Manatee County’s new $144 million campus scheduled to open in 2027.
Florida records more cloud-to-ground lightning than any other state. In most of the country, students return to class as summer storms taper off. In Florida, the school year opens while lightning activity is at or near its annual peak.
Campus design compounds the exposure. Many Florida schools are not single buildings. They are clusters of classroom buildings joined by covered walkways and open-air corridors, and students and teachers move outdoors between classes throughout the day, as do families arriving for football games, graduations and evening events.
